No seriously, fuck right off.

After a year of radio silence that is the message I wish to convey.

After the murder of an MP by a deluded fascist nut job, I am heartily sick of the pro-EU hand wringers wheeling out their argument that although they in absolutely no way wish to politicise such a hideous event, if you don’t vote how they want then you’re some form of sexist racist homophobic fascist who probably gases immigrant kittens for kicks.

So my message to them is simple.
Fuck off. When you’ve finished fucking off, fuck off some further.

How dare you equate extremists with people who have perfectly legitimate concerns about the political tyranny overtaking the EU and wish to think globally instead. How dare you try to use sympathy for a bereaved family to support a purely political agenda to support a regime that usurps elected governments to impose technocratic puppet leaderships.

Of course any right minded person feels utterly terrible for the grieving family. Same as for every murdered policeman, teacher, nurse or even *gasp* an unemployed person. I don’t see their families getting calls from Obama or parliament recalled? The only people reacting differently are the political establishment and Westminster echo chamber that are suddenly faced with some of the shit the rest of the electorate have to deal with.

By all means vote however you want. In or out, don’t care. It’ll make little difference. Want to try and convince me one way or the other? Feel free. Try and propagandise an act of terror or murder and claim unless I agree with you I’m as bad? Fuck right off.

Oh, almost forgot. May contain profanities.

3139932232_2fbbb87822_bQuick article on Beeb regarding change in facebook policy. Apparently it is up to users to condemn videos of beheadings.

It really does speak volumes for us doesn’t it? We can allow murders to be videoed and shared, but if a woman goes topless, or Dawkins forbid 2 people consent to be videoed doing something perfectly natural we scream for the censor and create social taboos around it.

Got to wonder if that’s the right way round.

As some may know, I enjoy a bit of a play on twitter now and then. I find the immediacy entertaining, not to mention the continual amounts of “fail” that occurs when corporations or overblown egos come face to face with the real public and are unable to avoid their responses.

I especially love the idea that politicians and those who seek power feel compelled to actually engage. If a tweet is framed reasonably it must be tough to avoid answering. Occasionally you get answers which is more than any other medium provides.

Anyway, in response to one of my tweets the leader of Stockton Borough Council, Robert Cook engaged…
ccok tweet

The awful grammar of someone who is in charge of a public authority aside, his point being I do not use my real name.

Is it a fair one? After all I do not use my real name here either, and I am on occasion somewhat disparaging about some people in positions of power.

In response, I think no.

There are several reasons I prefer to remain largely anonymous (largely as a fair few people know full well who I am)

My main concern is that of my loved ones. Those who take issue with matters of fact yet want to know your name are seeking to make it personal. They want to play the man not the ball. If they are prepared to do that then they may be prepared to attack those near to me convicted of their guilt by association. I am not willing to risk their professional or personal well being.

Next it is precisely because they wish to make it personal. Without a name they must engage the point, the topic or the argument. They cannot sidestep valid points of question so easily. Since I make no points using my past behaviour as a supporting argument then my past behaviours or positions are irrelevant.

Lastly protection. I may be employed in a sensitive position, I may be in charge of a controversial project, I may do business with those I criticise and wish to keep taking their money, or it may be more personal. Perhaps, yes, I am your father.
luke_i_am_your_father

So I guess my point here would be. Why do you want to know? I am not seeking gain power over my fellow man. Quite the opposite I wish I could be left alone. I do not seek to tell others how to live, I would have us leave each to live how they chose. I do not seek to take your earnings, your liberty or your belongings. Why does my name matter?

At best because you want to check I am a voter of yours. That’s cynical and makes points no less valid. At worst it is so you can attack me personally instead of my arguments. Even more cynical, intellectually and morally bankrupt and does nothing to argue against any point I may make.

So in my more usual language. Stop avoiding the question and actually give the people that pay for these arse-brained ideas an answer.

Much internet fun to be had on twitter right now, but belies a serious topic.

Porn Tsar & MP Claire Perry responding to a clamour from Parents, voters, the Daily Mail had touted a plan to force ISPs to filter internet content according to an approved list given by the Ministry of Truth, Government.

This, of course, was all in the name of protecting the kiddies from the Tsunami of filth that lurks online ready to pounce onto unsuspecting 5 year olds and drag them off to be trafficked to BBC DJs.

Adults would be able to opt out of this censorship filtering, but further into the proposed great British firewall plan was the intention to log all search terms and report them to Governemnt agencies.

So why am I against it you surely cry? Why am I happy to sacrifice the innocents upon the alter of liberty?

Well firstly, and simply, it is bullshit. It fails on every point.

It will save exactly zero abuses. Predators do not use google to satisfy their urges. A voluntary filter will not prevent ftp traffic, emails, usb flash drives, or secure connections.

Filtering and blocking websites can be circumvented as any teenager who wishes to pirate music can tell you.

Dozy bint Perry MP conflates perfectly legal porn with images of abuse. Whether your tastes extend to looking at the Daily Mail side bar, or to tamer rude videos the fact remains they are legal. Why should a puritanical MP wheeling out moral bandwagons force you to effectively register to be able to view them? Because that info would never end up on say, a CRB check to become a teacher or foster carer would it?

The issue of child abuse does not require more law. It requires the enforcing of the ones we have. It is already a crime. What it needs is the hard work of coppers supporting to prosecute and punish properly individuals who perpetrate such acts. It is heinous and should not be equated with porn, fetishists or anything else the moral crusaders deem inappropriate on your behalf.

If you want some idea of how technologically literate Perry is, she was advised earlier this week that her own website was insecure.

Lo, and behold! the following day her site was hacked and filled with porn. Not illegal abuse images, just run of the mill smut. This was reported on the political blog Guido Fawkes. It is important to note the word reported there.

Claire Perry immediately took to twitter…

That’s right. She accused him of hosting the porn (actually it was her site doing the hosting), hacking her site, and sponsoring the attack. She then went on to try and bully him into removing the report by threatening his paid work at the Sun

As of now the allegations remain up, despite being asked to remove them. She offered no proof other than her outrage, and she has disappeared off of twitter whilst anyone having passing knowledge of a computer rips into her about not knowing her screen grabs from her hyperlinks. Following a readers poll it appears Guido has instigated legal proceedings over the allegations.

So the upshot? She has probably killed off any chance of her policy making it through. It is just a power grab on the ability to censor the net after all. even a Tory website has torn her to shreds over secret plans to exaggerate ISP success at filtering. The real responsibility for looking after children lies where it always has done. With parents. As I have remarked before, if you wouldn’t let your kids talk in the streets with a stranger, or chat on their mobile with a stranger in the dead of night, why do you think it is ok to let them do it on a computer?

Your children, your responsibility

So few last words. First up this was ISP Andrews and Arnolds response to the prospect of China like censorship of the net in the UK
selection

and finally, apparently this may be Claire Perry MP briefing her tech team about the internet

After Phorm and Prism that we know about, do you really trust the politicians to tell you what you can read?

Great article on the BBC mentioning charities that are up in arms about new TV show “in London that encourage viewers to believe they are cured of life-threatening illnesses by prayer”
Apparently they reckon it is dangerous to tell people that prayer has cured their diabetes & cancer.

I may surprise you here. Brilliant. We need more of this. Get them on BBC1 at 7 o’clock on saturday nights. Think of the possibilities that will benefit society!

First, anyone foolish enough to believe this rubbish will of course die. If they are going to put faith healing by a conman on a TV over advice by a doctor, hospitals and science then lets get them out of the gene pool before they pollute it any further.

Next, it helps the NHS! In this time of austerity the NHS is desperately overcrowded and underfunded. Lets encourage the fairy tale followers to not clutter up wards and surgeries, but to rely on Bishop Simon Iheanacho laying on of holy oil, exorcisms and battling the “snakes in the body” and leave the hospitals to the rest of us.

just don’t.
Not because of amazon per se, but because your “express” delivery will be via Yodel (previously Home delivery network, so shit they had to change their name!). Not that this is anything new!

I will share my parcels travels with you, it was purchased on the 15th for a 24hr deliver. So far so good. it made it to stockton overnight. Was put on a van and off it went. We needless to say waited in. To no avail. Didn’t expect much sunday of course, so was relieved to see it made it back on the van Monday, only to go back to the depot again with an attempt at delivery. So a 24 hr delivery sent out for delivery twice and not even attempted. Just taken back, and I’m supposed to wait for a 4th day. Yep, that was going to happen.

the tracking looks like this

15/02/2013 08:58:04 Hatfield UK Arrival Scan
16/02/2013 07:28:00 STOCKTON DEPOT Arrival Scan
16/02/2013 09:25:00 STOCKTON VAN The parcel has been loaded on to the drivers van
16/02/2013 ##:##:## STOCKTON DEPOT The parcel is in the Depot
18/02/2013 09:07:00 STOCKTON VAN The parcel has been loaded on to the drivers van
18/02/2013 15:57:00 STOCKTON DEPOT The parcel is in the Depot
18/02/2013 17:20:00 CUSTOMER The parcel has been delivered

You’ll note it says delivered. that is incorrect. It should say customer was so fucked off at waiting and not even getting a “sorry you were out card” that he tracked you down as they don’t publish depot phone numbers or locations, phoned their head office to check location, and then came down and got it himself. This included the fight with the sour faced care in the community harridan who insisted I needed a card your driver didn’t bother to try and deliver.

So if you are waiting for Yodel to deliver in Teesside my advice is don’t. Go to their depot and kick off. Don’t tolerate shitness. Oh and demand your delivery charge refund from Amazon, who were surprisingly helpful once you find the page where you click and they phone you back. In fact I got the refund before I got the parcel. Speaks volumes for the carrier that does.

Anyway the depot address should you need it
Yodel / Home delivery network
39 Sedgfield Way
Portrack Interchange Business Park
Stockton-on-Tees
TS18 2SG

I found this number for them 08442480627 if I find a better one I will update.

As for Amazon, to get them to phone you back for a late item
go to https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/contact-us/general-questions.html
select item you are having problems with, and the type of issue. Then select “call us” – don’t panic you don’t have to. You then enter your phone number and they call you back immediately, although expect to hold on whilst an operator picks up their end.

Hope you have an easier time than I did. Got there in the end though.

Not to fall into the national stereotype or anything at this time of national crisis (well, minor snowfall I’ll grant you), but I quite like weather stuff. I find it interesting, just as well really as I have worked as a weatherman. (An awesome one naturally)

So in a break from the traditional moaning, I though I would share some stuff on the net that may interest you

First up. Weather charts. Not the stuff you get on the TV but proper ones, The UK Met Office charts are best, but curiously the best place to see them is not on their site! MetBrief has a full set, regularly updated.

If you fancy watching an animation of the current precipitation then the last couple of hours of radar imagery can be viewed here

Mucking about on the water? Then the inshore waters FX (forecast!) is here

Fantastic satellite imagery is available via Dundee Uni receiving station (needs free registration) – hint: you want the latest images from the Meteosat SEVIRI Also worth looking at the gallery of spectacular images

Want to know what it’s going to do and when? Probably the most accurate FX are the terminal airfield forecasts (TAFs) for aviation. You can look up your local one here and then once you’ve confused yourself, figure out the codes here

Some good detailed forecasts can be found at the Met Office and BBC as expected, but another good source is here at the weather underground

Or maybe we should bring back the Live TV version…

Whatever you end up doing, have fun and stay safe!

The Daily Fail has a campaign to keep the kiddies safe from all the porn and paedos that lurk on the internet…

As everyone knows when a child goes online a light flashes at paedo central and they are bombarded by grooming requests every 5 secs*. As a result only a massive censoring campaign will stop a legion of Jimmy Savilles literally leaping through the computer screen the moment your back is turned**

To this end they’ve managed to scare a statement out of the PM, a man so full of concern for kids he lets his go free range in his local pub.

Let me reiterate the key points: with our new system, every parent will be prompted to protect their child online. If they don’t make choices, protection will be automatically on. No other Government has taken such radical steps before. And once all this is in place, Britain will have the most robust internet child protection measures of any country in the world – bar none.

To get all this underway, I have appointed Claire Perry MP to be my adviser on preventing the sexualisation and commercialisation of childhood.
Claire is a passionate campaigner for internet safety and mother of three. Her job will be to see this through, to get internet companies on board, to do what it takes to protect children and young people online.

So, basically companies should be forced to filter the internet by default.

Here’s an outrageous idea. How about parents should be responsible for their kids?

Would you let your child talk to strangers on the street without keeping an eye on them? Then why do parents abdicate responsibility for kids online? Would you let them talk to strange people on the phone in the bedroom late at night without supervision? then why let them skype or chat with them?

Of course it makes no odds. Kids know far more about computers than their parents anyway. Any teenager worth his salt can circumvent copy protection that Record companies spend billions on producing, you think a net filter designed to be simple enough for parents to use and set to off the moment it interferes with watching strictly-come-x-pap-idol online will be a problem? Who do they think sets up most of the computer gear in houses?

*like most Daily Fail facts this is bullshit
**Possibly. If you believe newspapers.

Ah, the age old question of free speech, freedom of belief and so on.

Today I saw a post on a buddies timeline

Being an atheist is okay. Being an atheist and shaming religions and spirituality as silly and not real is not okay. Being a Christian is okay. Being homophobic, misogynistic, racist or an otherwise hateful person and blaming it on your religion is not okay. Being a reindeer is okay. Bullying and excluding another reindeer because he has a shiny red nose is not okay

To which I replied…

if they didn’t want to be described as silly and not real, then they need to stop pretending silly and unreal stuff isn’t. But like the sentiment of lets have a beer regardless!

I was quickly slapped back into place by one of his friends…

…Ah, so you’re talking about superstrings, particle/wave duality, quantum tunneling, time dilation, quantum superposition etc. Silly and unreal things that I don’t understand but am happy to accept as helpful ways of explaining things. I have the same approach to God, and hoped that more than 3 minutes would pass from *** posting the picture I like, to a comment that actually misses the point of the picture entirely.

Okay… not fair to barge in on a friends timeline and start an argument. But this is my blog so I’m free to vent here

First up the assumption that I was talking about those things. Wrong. I was talking about religious claptrap being peddled as true. As the t-shirt slogan say. I will convert for evidence. If you peddle or defend ridiculous ideas that are plain silly, then do not be surprised or offended when someone calls it such.

As for “superstrings, particle/wave duality, quantum tunneling, time dilation, quantum superposition etc. Silly and unreal things that I don’t understand”. The fact you do not understand fully something does not make it silly and unreal. It merely shows you do not understand something. The scientific theories you mention are just that. Theories. Conclusions based on the best knowledge to hand that will be improved upon as we gain in scientific, experimental and theoretical knowledge. It’s called progress, and as I’ve stated before I’ll take a conclusion over a belief every time.

As for equating an intolerance of religious nonsense with homophobia, misogyny and racism. You mistake my intolerance of pandering to religion with an intolerance of religion. You are perfectly free to believe what delusion you choose. You may even hold beliefs the rest of civilisation find objection such as homophobia, misogyny and racism. But you are not exempt from having those beliefs criticised or ridiculed, and if you wish to inflict your beliefs on others or act in accordance with you beliefs then be expected to be asked for evidence or to justify your behaviour.

I think the point I “missed” is that I am not supposed to have the temerity to criticise an idea if it is labelled a “belief”. Well you’ve shit out there mate… As for “shaming religions”? They can only be shamed if they have done something shameful. Why on earth would an organisation guilty of a shameful act be deserving of special protection?

Finally, of course being a reindeer is okay. Reindeer have learnt from Santa that bullying is wrong and are never nasty to other reindeer now. To suggest otherwise is just plain stupid.

On a more cheerful note, if you want to see reindeer in action you can track Santa’s progress here

This time it’s the Mayans lack of foresight in extending their calendar that is causing consternation. It has been nearly two years since the last end of the world after all…

Russian government ministers have issued re-assuring messages, Bugarach in France has banned travellers to the UFO garage that could save the faithful.

Meanwhile in Oz, when they’re not calling up the NHS…

I am of course certain it is yet more religious ignorance writ large. The only end of the world we are witnessing is the gradual slide into a new dark ages as religion, extremism, ignorance and over population condemn the planet to a slow painful extinction.

So certain in fact, that if the sky pixie peddlars are right and it’s the second coming/end of calender/Ragnarök (delete as applicable) and I’m wrong and the world does in fact end I will buy every reader a pint at the winchester tavern

Last orders please…

Just so you know how long you have…
