But watch who you talk about!

Offensive on twitter and facebook about lost children? 3 months jailtime.

Celebrate 6 soldiers deaths and call for more of them to actually be murdered? Community service…

So if you’re offended by anything, not only can you write to points of view, or worst case a strongly worded letter to the Times. Now you can get the perpetrator locked up. Unless of course they pick on the forces. We all know they’re considered fair game.

The advertising, the endless drip of North Korean style you must be happy hysterical propaganda, the relentless stream of (LOCOG approved naturally) advertising.

Now this… You are not even allowed to post a link to their website unless…

Links to the Site. You may create your own link to the Site, provided that your link is in a text-only format. You may not use any link to the Site as a method of creating an unauthorised association between an organisation, business, goods or services and London 2012, and agree that no such link shall portray us or any other official London 2012 organisations (or our or their activities, products or services) in a false, misleading, derogatory or otherwise objectionable manner. The use of our logo or any other Olympic or London 2012 Mark(s) as a link to the Site is not permitted. View our guidelines on Use of the Games’ Marks.

So no saying nasty things about them ok? Like it’s a colossal waste of our money when we’re broke. That for a glorified egg and spoon jamboree that was supposed to benefit the country it only seems to benefit Coke and MacDonald’s. That it is simply fucking outrageous that troops have lost leave to provide cover for the farce that is the home office and G4S. That from now on I will do my best to avoid any product or service that is an official supporter of the Olympics

Of course I can’t link to their website now so you can find which corporations to avoid for yourself.

I can link here though

And again, it fails because once you are outside the UK their law does not apply to the internet you morons.

OK, quick one here. Another 451 error code?

Little girl writes a blog with her Dads help about her school dinners. Takes pics with the permission of the school, and gives them ratings. It gets a wider readership than expected and includes people sending her pics in from all over globe, she also uses it to promote a charity, Marys Meals which aims to combat hunger preventing an education for children in poverty. All good you’d think?

Except some of the appaling excuses for food led to criticism of the catering at the school. (If someone expected me to pay for some of the meals she was served they could expect some damn criticism as well)

So now Martha Payne is hauled out of class to be told she is banned from taking photos of the food. Not by the School who her father has been at pains to point out has supported her blogging, but by the Local Authority, under the excuse that it lead to calls for the caterers to be sacked in the local newspaper and it distressed them.

If you serve that up to kids then you should be distressed. You should also be ashamed.

Perhaps the LA should spend a little more time and effort looking after those children they have a duty of care for and a little less time effort and scarce money censoring the internet,

Needless to say the very act of attmepting to censor a 9 year old girls blog has ensured that everyone has read it, it’s gone viral and featured on the BBC etc, and generally everyone now knows what a pack of shits the local authority are (no shocker there I know). I suggest they print out and frame a definition of the Streisand effect in every public sector office throughout the land. It has now passed 2,500,000 hits as of this lunchtime and already broken her target for her charity, Expect 3 million by this evening I reckon. So how’s that censorship working out for you Argyll and Bute council?

Bravo Zulu Martha. Keep up the good work, and I hope you keep blogging, writing and campaigning.

A link to her blog here, which is very good reading!

And if you wish to support her charity, click here!

It appears the sudden internet backlash (netlash?) has lead to the LA to reconsider their decision. who’d have imagined? There is a statement on their website which contains a few gems I’ll share with you…

The Council has directly avoided any criticism of anyone involved in the ‘never seconds’ blog for obvious reasons

What? like picking on a child might make you look a bit, well, you know, like bullying arseholes?

In particular, the photographic images uploaded appear to only represent a fraction of the choices available to pupils

Because they were of her lunch you twats. Not PR studio photos staged to make the menu look wholesome and inviting, but photos of the reality of her lunch. For instance when was the last time you got a BigMac that looked like the BigMac photo?

Pupils can have as much salad and bread as they want. Salad, vegetables, fruit, yoghurt and cheese options are available every day. These are standing options and are not a result of any changes in response to the blog site.

Amazing that none of the pupils there were aware of this until meetings took place resulting from the blog though?

The council’s focus is now on supporting the school in the education of young people in Argyll and Bute.

Instead of trying to censor a young girls efforts at internet journalism?

+++UPDATE 2+++
3.4 Million hits to her blog this evening. Over a million in the last 24 hours. Local Authority played a blinder there…

Here we go again!

The Church has written in vehement disgust and appaled anger at the Governments plan to allow gays to call their union marriage. If this heinous and outrageous crime is permitted they claim they will break with the state (and all those subsidies?) and threaten to stop conducting weddings on behalf of the state.

Despite the fact fact that the Governments proposed legislation granting all orientations the same partnership rights specifically will not force Clergy to conduct gay marriages they are up in arms that anyone else be allowed to do something they disapprove of. They go further in insisting they be allowed to retain their bigoted and discrimatory church rules because they fear it could be challenged in the European courts. Which is somewhat strange, as they appear to be a fan of these coursts when it suits them?

I’ll forgo reiterating all the usual arguments about religion, and ask this.

If they break with the state, refuse to carry out state work (ie; marriages) then what is the church but a social club with some funny rules and charitable status?

In order to keep charitable status, any charity must abide by the equality act which unlike the rules they call laws, is in fact a Law, that states;

…makes it unlawful to discriminate against anyone because of a protected characteristic in a wide range of areas including employment and the provision of services.

The following are protected characteristics:

gender reassignment
marriage and civil partnership
pregnancy and maternity
religion or belief
sexual orientation

Failure to comply with this should mean a charity loses it’s charitable status. Should be fun when they have to pay some tax on their income, property and investments. Maybe then they can contribute to helping the poor in society instead of sitting in churches and mansions and spout outdated prejudice against minorities.

We may as well as we get another knee jerk law to combat Trolls!

It displays the staggering level of ignorance the judiciary has for the internet. It will be a criminal act to upset someone. Will there be an official list of insults available? What about sites hosted internationally? If I host my website in the Caribbean or South America how exactly would they prevent publication? On Twitter will we see a repeat of the twitter joke trial where a man is arrested and tried for an obvious joke, but the thousands who re-tweeted the exacts same words are ignored?

Farcical, and another attempt at censorship. freedom of speech means people will get offended. So what? be offended; you are free to. Be as offended as you like. But we all know the only use to which laws like this end up being put to is to “protect the privacy” in hiding rich and powerful wrongdoing.

So frankly and as this is about bad language on the net, you can all go fuck yourselves if that’s the case.

I don’t find trolls particularly amusing. Like a playground kid shouting names. Just ignore them, if they threaten actual violence then they have broken existing laws and should be arrested for that. There is no need for more ill conceived rubbish masquerading as law.

Piece in the Gazette actually exposing some of the contempt the elected councillors have for the voters.

Essence is that George Dunning, leader of the council (and convinced his Reich will last for a thousand years, well, till 2019 at least) and his cronies ignored what they knew to be the overwhelming will of the electorate and ploughed ahead with their own vanity project. Although he can’t be bothered to attend budget scrutiny meetings that may ask why he pisses so much cash away on white elephants during the current fiscal constraints or why he put up council tax rather than take a government grant to prove a point, he did have time to receive a report clearly demonstrating that the name of the vertical pier (a building to you and me) was hated. Because what people actually wanted, if anything, was a pier.

The answer?

Well in true Stalinesque fashion, organise a vote, on names that they controlled to ensure an approved name was designated and they could claim it was a popular vote..

Despite all this he told the Gazette

“I still think Vertical Pier is a good name for it,” Cllr Dunning told the Gazette this week. “I originally wanted to call it the Steel Tower, but that is a bit boring. I think Vertical Pier gets people interested.

“The name has caused controversy but that hasn’t been a bad thing. I think it is marvellous from a political perspective.”

Or to put it another way. I like the name, fuck you, and I’m getting a big shiny building to get my picture taken in front of.

In fact the only sensible quote so far is from Cllr Glyn Nightingale

“It was a mistake from the start and was just a way to fob off the public that this is a real pier. But people are not stupid. This is nothing like a pier. The council will have known full well that it would be unpopular with people.”

And yet they went ahead regardless. Shows you just what they think of the electorate once they’ve got the term in office.

The leaked document is here for your consideration courtesy of the Gazette

This week saw the insanity of the olympics reach new proportions as the organising committee (LOCOG) got Space Hijackers removed from twitter. A peaceful bunch of protestors who seek to maintain public spaces for public uses. Who in their own words seek to

“battle the constant oppressive encroachment onto public spaces of institutions, corporations and urban planners. We oppose the way that public space is being eroded and replaced by corporate profit making space.”

Not a notorious terrorist organisation – their crime? spoofing the olympic symbols.

Note, that is a crime they stand accused of, not copyright infringement as such. Such is the Orwellian reach of this vanity project the political classess have made it criminal to encroach on their ability to profit from these games. Any undue advertising, protesting or anti games sentiment is not permitted. It has been made criminal with officials having the right to enter property and seize anything they deem not in accordance with the games legislation.

It is for instance now an offence to use branded phrases such as

The word ‘London 2012’
The words ‘Olympic’, ‘Olympiad’, ‘Olympian’ (and their plurals and words very similar to them – eg ‘Olympix’
The words ‘Paralympic’, ‘Paralympiad’, ‘Paralympian’ and their plurals and words very similar to them – eg ‘Paralympix’

The legislation goes wider, you may not use specific words in conjunction as described

For the purpose of considering whether a person has infringed the London Olympics association right a court may, in particular, take account of his use of a combination of expressions of a kind specified in sub-paragraph (2).
(2)The combinations referred to in sub-paragraph (1) are combinations of—

(a)any of the expressions in the first group, with

(b)any of the expressions in the second group or any of the other expressions in the first group.

(3)The following expressions form the first group for the purposes of sub-paragraph (2)—

(b)“Two Thousand and Twelve”,

(c)“2012”, and

(d)“twenty twelve”.

(4)The following expressions form the second group for the purposes of sub-paragraph (2)—

(f)sponsor, and

So not only have they effectively trademarked the year 2012, you are committing an offence if your advertising has the words London 2012 on it.

So what of the legacy? Surely that is the real payoff from all the disruption and cost?

So lets take a sport dear to me – shooting. The promises of lasting venues is a sham. Rather than use the money to invest and improve in a lasting venue there is a purpose built one to be torn down after the games. The government have been forced to enact temporary law to allow pistol shooting, but permits only cover the athletes and then only for the games. So the British Olympic team will again be forced to train outside of the UK. Although it is amazing there are any as the funding for the pistol shooters was removed whilst rifle and shotgun continue to be promoted.

So despite the private roads for the profiteers and politicians, denied to ambulances, why should you care? Well how about on cost?

The olympics were supposed to cost £2.4bn when bid for. Latest estimates concede that has risen to around £24bn (and that’s official accounting, I dread to think what is hidden). That’s £400 for every person in the UK, or about 2 and half grand for an average family. For 2 weeks glorified egg and spoon with associated hangers on. That’s 10 brand new hospitals right there.

The spirit of the games is dead. It was trampled to death in the rush of the great and the good to profit in both cash and vanity. It died of a heart attack feasting on the official food of the games, McDonalds, it lost its teeth to the offical drink Coca Cola and the official chocolate Cadburys, it went blind from Dow Chemicals in Bhopal,

I actually quite like the Olympics themselves, I like watching the obscure stuff, it’s usually hilarious. But I’m inclined to agree with the spacehijackers

We’re not opposed to the sports events, and we’re all in favour of having a big party – but only if everyone’s invited.

Just how low will a president go in order to justify their claims?

This week saw the airing of an Argentinian Olympic propaganda advert, featuring their hockey captain Fernando Zylberberg. There was a couple of issues, firstly why does a nation need an advert for something they’re invited to? Not sure. Secondly it features their hockey captain not only climbing over a war memorial to the Falklands war dead, but it was filmed in the Falklands without permission.

That they saw fit to sully a memorial in order to further a petty propaganda advert is outrageous. Why do we sit and take this? The Kelpers have freely decided to keep their home part of the UK and yet a neighbour seeks to annex them an do do nothing. Why they wouldn’t want to be run by a bankrupt country where they simply steals companies because they weren’t selling enough product cheaply enough to locals (although they left the percentage owned by Argentinians alone?). They are run by a president that seeks to change election law to be able to retain power after following her husband into power, and now looks to preserve the families power and wealth for her tubby offspring. What’s not to like?

And yet we sit there whilst embargoes and blockades are forced upon a peaceful population, we simply ignore the repeated diplomatic tirades, and turn the other cheek.

Despite the lack of naval airpower the UK possesses the military capability obliterate Argentinian air force and any Naval unit that risked attacking. We need to match that with a willingness to hit back economically and diplomatically. We are not dealing with a rational administration on this subject, CFK uses the issue to deflect attention from her power grab and economic implosion. we are dealing with an administration that uses the Olympics and war memorials to push a political fascist agenda to annex foreign territory, now when did we last see that?

Shame there is no Jesse Owens at these Olympics.

So a vice chancellor thinks consideration should be given to banning alcohol on campus, not because of health issues, or it effecting students ability to study, or that it is a contributing factor to crime, especially violence and sexual attacks, but because some dark age religious nutters find it immoral.

I think I missed the bit at which it is apparently became compulsory? Are they forced to partake? Does someone secretly lace their food with it?

So they think it is acceptable to try and enforce their viewpoint and religious made up code onto others? It is considered acceptable to infringe anothers freedoms not because they seek to restrict yours but simply because they offend your minority fairy tale viewpoint? Who do they think they are to dictate how others should live?

For once I hope students drink themselves into oblivion. I hope they do it with a smile on their face. I hope they drink and fornicate to their hearts content, I hope they do it during ramadan, easter, lent, equinoxes, solstices and any other arbitary bullshit holiday you can name. And shame on any VC at a uni which claims to offer

…courses of quality, in a vibrant, socially diverse environment

which in fact considers forcing the majority of students to live in the dark ages because of a small backward minority,

is that clear enough?

Balls to it, I’m off for a pint.

Been incredibly busy of late, so a welcome respite from my rants for you all I guess, however…

The Beeb carries a report today that was carried out for Panorama, the headlines are…

Two-thirds of young British Asians agree that families should live according to the concept of “honour”, a poll for BBC Panorama suggests.

Of 500 young Asians questioned, 18% also felt that certain behaviour by women that could affect her family’s honour justified physical punishment.

These included disobeying their father, and wanting to leave an exisiting or prearranged marriage.”

it goes on…

“However, when divided by sex, 6% of young Asian men said that honour killings could be justified, compared with just 1% of Asian women surveyed.”

Multiculturalism was one of the root causes it is suggested. Sensitivity to other cultures.

It is not. It is fear of being labelled racist that is a root cause. Fear that stops people saying this is wrong. If your culture advocates violence towards women for the crime of “not doing as they are told”, or “refusing to marry someone they do not wish to”, or “daring to have a relationship with someone from another culture or race”, then your culture itself is a mysoginistic, racist, abhorent relic of an uncivilised world and should be consigned to the scrapheap of history alongside slavery, cannibalism and Simon Cowell.

And if you are part of that culture and refuse to speak against it you are just as bad.
